Why does fridge and freezer disposal cost more?

Fridges and freezers contain refrigerant gases and insulation foam that, in older units, include ozone-depleting substances. They are classed as hazardous waste and have to go to an approved treatment facility where the gas and foam are captured before the cabinet is shredded and recycled. That specialist treatment costs more than recycling a washing machine or cooker.
